Audience Effects Theory

1) Write a definition of a passive audience:
A passive audience takes media information the same as everyone else. They don't think about the information that they received

2) Write a definition of an active audience:
An Active audience interacts with the media they consume and make conscious choices with media they consume

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:
Audiences are always passive and take in information as if it was injected into their minds. There is no individuality in audience members

4) Write down a media product (e.g. TV show, newspaper or videogame) for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you:

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: Media text - The Times newspaper
 > Why: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.

PERSONAL IDENTITY: Selma
 > Why:  It is a movie which tells the story of the civil rights movement in America. It is part of personal identity because it shows the struggles of black people for equal rights.

DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: Nintendo Switch Sports
 > Why: A fun game to get people active and make themselves feel good about it. It is a unique approach to traditional video games where you just sit and play.

RELATIONSHIPS: Love Island
 > Why: It is a popular dating TV Show with many viewers across the world. It shows single people looking for a new partner.

5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).

Visceral- A visceral pleasure would be the waves crashing in the water, and the group of fish swimming together. Also the slow motion editing and the music.
Vicarious- A vicarious pleasure would be the seal floating on the small piece of ice. It would make the viewer feel bad because they know that global warming affects different habitats where creatures live.
Voyeuristic- Sea stars underneath the water

To take this further, select a media text of your own choice, embed it in your blog and write another detailed paragraph analysing the audience pleasures in that product.

Episode of EastEnders:

Vicarious-A vicarious pleasure would be at 0:57 where Jasmine picks up her coat and drops the lanyard. This scene makes the viewer feel curious about what she is hiding.
Voyeuristic- A voyeuristic pleasure would be when Lauren picks up the lanyard to see who it belongs to.
Visceral- A visceral pleasure would be at the end where jasmine pushes Cindy down the stairs. The viewer would feel concerned for her because she is unresponsive.
